SBR Secures $1.8 Billion Judgment For U.S. Marine Victims of Iran-Sponsored Terrorist Attack

On April 20, 2016, the Supreme Court of the United States, by a 6-2 vote, affirmed the decision of the Second Circuit Court of Appeals and the District Court of the Southern District of New York, which directed Citibank N.A., Clearstream Banking SA and Banca UBAE SpA to turn over to the Marine victims of the 1983 terror attack in Beirut, Lebanon and their families the approximately $1.8 billion that those banks had held for the benefit of the Central Bank of Iran. SBR has been lead enforcement counsel for these Marines in this and other court proceedings in New York since 2011. The Supreme Court’s ruling marks an important milestone in a long struggle by these Marines and their families to enforce judgments against the government of Iran totaling approximately $8 billion in damages arising from Iran’s sponsorship of the 1983 terrorist bombing of the U.S. Marine barracks in Beirut, Lebanon. This marks by far the largest successful enforcement of a judgment held by victims of terrorism against any foreign sovereign to date. We are very proud to have represented this courageous group of clients and pleased to have brought them some solace by holding the Iranian government accountable for the horrific attack on the brave Marines who were then serving in Lebanon on a peace-keeping mission.
